About Us

Blue River is a non-profit online literary journal produced by Creighton University’s MFA program. We seek fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry by all writers not affiliated with Creighton University. Blue River is a biannual journal published in digital format by students under the guidance of the MFA faculty. In addition to publishing work by writers, we also provide training in literary editing to journal staff members, preparing them for work in the publishing industry. Follow us on:

Managing Editor

Hannah Clark:

Received MFA in Poetry from Creighton University who enjoys live music, lovely words, and local food. She moved to Omaha after studying theatre and English at Chadron State College and has been featured in such journals as Belletrist, The Gordian Review, and Rootstalk.

Editors

Aaron Scobie, Prose Editor:

An MFA candidate studying poetry at Creighton University. He received his Bachelors in English Literature  from Auburn University. He has read for Southern Humanities Review, and Auburn University’s undergraduate literary magazine, The Circle. He has been published in Free State Review and has a chapbook published through The Independent’s Book Project. He spends his days enjoying his time with his wife and their son.

Katherine Tidwell, Poetry Editor:

Is an MFA candidate at Creighton University. She earned her degree in English Literature from Auburn University. She loves her husband, her son, Fox, and every animal who has ever lived. Katherine writes poetry and lyrical essays.

Bryce Deline:

SJ is a Jesuit brother originally from Tacoma, WA.

Malaz Ebrahim:

An MFA candidate at Creighton University. She earned a degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. Now living in Omaha, she spends most of her time writing, enjoying local coffee, playing with her dog, and rock climbing.

Tyler Faison:

Is an MFA candidate at Creighton University.

Kristen Bledsoe:

Studied English Literature at Auburn University and interned for the Southern Humanities Review.

Submissions

Submissions Window

January 15 – May 30 & August 1 – November 30

Submissions General guidelines

  • Submissions, if accepted, must not be published anywhere else (including self-publishing, blogs, and online publishing) before being published in Blue River.
  • Simultaneous submissions are welcome, as long as you email blueriverreview@gmail.com to withdraw your work immediately if it is accepted elsewhere
  • Please submit only one piece per category during each submission period.

Required for all Genres

  • In the title of the email please state your full name and the title of your submission.
  • In the body of the email please include your name, address, and a short 3rd person Bio (200 words max).
  • Your submission must be included as a Microsoft Word attachment saved with the title of your submission only. (specifics for poetry below)

Submissions By Genre

Fiction

Fiction submissions must be double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font, and not more than 2000 words.

Creative Non-Fiction submissions must be double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font, and not more than 2000 words.

Poetry

Your submission must be included as a one Microsoft Word attachment, one poem per page, saved with the title of the first poem in your submission only.

Poetry submissions may include 3-5 poems. This should be 12pt Times New Roman font, double spaced.
